For the Love of Daughters and Donuts

Mutuáli I got up at 4:30 this morning. That’s a solid two-and-a-half hours earlier than I normally get up. But it was important.

Uherský Brod You see, my young adult daughter was super excited about a new Hurts Donuts store opening near us. Well, not super near. But about ten miles away. The first 100 customers would be entered into a drawing to receive free donuts for a year. We intended to be in that number. They opened at five, so it was rise and shine at 4:30.

My husband (and the best father in the world) got up and drove us there, even though we could have driven ourselves. Dads do things like that for their girls. The place wasn’t a madhouse as we suspected it might be. Some folks had camped out there all night to be there when it opened. A reasonable number of people lined the store that lit up the predawn morning. The workers were cheerful and glad we’d come. So were we.

Let me say right here that I am on a diet. I’m in need of losing at least 20, if not 30, pounds. So why in the world did I go to a donut store at five a.m.? Because I love my daughter and I love making memories with her. We bought a dozen colorful, sugar-laden donuts and even bought two Hurts Donut t-shirts that will score us BOGO donuts for life. One shirt for Ashley, one for hubbie, Rollin. None for me. #stayingondiet.

Twenty years from now, I imagine us looking back at this early morning excursion and laughing that we did it. We’ll remember that a lady asked me to take a picture of her with her dozen donuts and still another of her standing by the monsterous donut hanging on the wall. We’ll talk about how after we left there we drove through Dutch Bros. for coffee and were a living Hurts Donuts commercial to the baristas, showing them our dozen.  Their ooos and ahhhs and the way they called their coworkers to come and look will remain with us.

Will I be tired today? Probably. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Only for the love of daughters and donuts. Even if I didn’t eat a single crumb.

What’s your favorite donut shop? What’s something you’ve done simply because you love someone?
